Budget-Friendly Tips to Keep Your Baby Warm This Fall

When the weather turns colder, your baby may need a few extra things to stay warm, healthy and comfortable. You don’t have to spend a lot to be ready for the season.
Here are some practical, budget-friendly ways to prepare:
1. Build a clothing swap network
Babies grow quickly, and many parents have gently used clothes their children no longer wear. Swap items with friends, family or neighbors. You can also look for local swap events through parenting groups or community centers.
2. Buy Clothing Second-Hand
Babies grow quickly, which means many parents end up with clothes that were only worn a few times. Thrift stores, consignment shops, and online resale groups are great places to find affordable, gently used items.
3. Layer Instead of Buying New Seasonal Wardrobes
Layering lighter clothes with sweaters or jackets can help you get more use from what you already own. It also makes it easier to adjust to changing indoor and outdoor temperatures.
4. Make Your Own Stroller or Car Seat Blankets
A piece of fleece from a fabric store can be cut to size without sewing. It’s warm, affordable and easy to wash. Always keep blankets clear of straps and buckles.
5. Protect Skin from Dryness
Cooler air can dry out your baby’s skin. You don’t need expensive creams. A small amount of plain petroleum jelly can protect cheeks and lips before heading outside.
6. Use Community Resources
At FEP, we offer free baby clothes, blankets and other essentials for families in the first year. Local churches, libraries and community organizations often host winter supply drives where you can find warm clothing, diapers and more.
Preparing for colder weather is about being resourceful and knowing where to look for help. If you are raising a baby in the first year and could use support, FEP is here for you. Call or text 614.644.4445 to learn more about our free programs and resources.
