Your First Holiday Season as a Parent: How to Make it Easier

The holidays bring extra plans, family gatherings, and expectations. If you are in your baby’s first year, it can feel overwhelming to juggle all of it while caring for your little one. You are not alone if you feel stretched thin this season.

Here are a few ways to keep the holidays calmer for you and your baby.

Keep Your Baby’s Routine in Mind

It may be tempting to stay out late or skip naps during holiday events. Babies thrive on routines, and keeping a regular schedule helps reduce fussiness. If you need to attend a gathering, plan for shorter visits or create a quiet space where your baby can nap.

Set Boundaries with Family

Loved ones may want to hold your baby or expect you to attend every event. It’s okay to say no. You can thank family for their excitement while still protecting your baby’s needs and your own. Boundaries help everyone enjoy the time together more.

Simplify Your Traditions

This may not be the year for elaborate meals or hours of decorating. Choose a few traditions that matter most and let the rest go for now. Your baby will not remember this holiday, but you will remember if you were able to enjoy it.

Care for Yourself Too

Holiday stress can take a toll on your body and mind. Try to eat balanced meals, rest when you can, and accept help if it is offered. Even small moments of self-care can make a difference.

Focus on What Matters

The first year is full of changes. The most important part of the holiday season is the time you share with your baby and the people who support you.

At FEP, we walk with families through the first year of parenting. From classes to clothing to encouragement, you don’t have to do this alone.
